Oral surgeons are responsible for performing procedures that involve the mouth and jaw, which include dental implant placement. Dental implants are a popular tooth replacement option that offers many benefits. When considering tooth replacement, many general dentists refer their patients to an oral surgeon, as they are experts at replacing missing teeth with dental implants, which can be both natural-appearing and -functioning.
Dental implants from an oral surgeon
Below is an overview of dental implants, including what to expect when getting them from an oral surgeon.
Dental implants
Dental implants are small, titanium screw-shaped prosthetics used to replace the structure and support system of a tooth. They are placed beneath the gums and directly into the bone by an oral surgeon during a minimally invasive procedure. Dental implants alone do not replace teeth, but they do act as the replacement support system, as well as the starting point for the entire tooth replacement process.
The process of dental implants
The placement of dental implants from an oral surgeon is not the only procedure involved in the process. Instead, there are two to three other procedures required. After the oral surgeon places the implants, the patient will return home to undergo recovery. This involves a process known as osseointegration, in which the dental implants fuse with the natural bone.
A few months later, the patient will return to the oral surgeon for the abutment attachment. The gum will have to be re-opened in order to access the top of the implant. An abutment is securely attached on top so it can connect the head to the artificial tooth. It usually takes a couple more months for the process of osseointegration to be completed.
Lastly, the patient will undergo the placement of their artificial teeth, which may be dental crowns or implant-supported dentures. Both options may require two separate appointments, one for the impressions and the second for the actual placement.
Information from an oral surgeon
When considering dental implants, most oral surgeons prefer to prepare patients accordingly. Because the dental implant process is lengthy and requires a time commitment and patience, it is important that potential patients understand what is required. The oral surgeon will require an evaluation and consultation, in which the timeline, requirements and expectations are discussed. While the process can seem daunting, the results have proven to be worth it.
Dental implants help support artificial teeth that appear and function similarly to natural teeth. Additionally, dental implants help keep the jawbone intact, which can deteriorate when there are missing teeth.
