The All-on-4® procedure: A smile makeover treatment option

Outlined below is everything that there is to know about the All-on-4® procedure. When considering a smile makeover, it can be helpful to review the following information.

All-on-4®

The term All-on-4® refers to a type of implant-supported dentures, which dentists frequently recommend to patients who need a solution for missing teeth. This solution, in particular, is a great option for someone who has an entire arch of missing teeth, whether that be the top or bottom half.

The dental implants used for All-on-4® are typically made of titanium, which is a biodegradable material that the body rarely rejects. The dentures that are supported by the implants are typically made of plastic and nylon materials, while the artificial teeth are made of typically made of porcelain.

All-on-4® is a popular choice because it only requires four dental implants for an entire arch of teeth, which is different from other tooth replacement options. Additionally, it makes recovery easier because the mouth only has to heal from four implant placements, as opposed to one for each individual missing tooth.

How the process works

The All-on-4® process is unique in that there are multiple parts to it. To begin, the patient will undergo a surgical procedure in which four dental implants will be placed, in either the top arch or bottom arch. If both arches are to be replaced, then the oral surgeon will place four in the top arch and four in the bottom arch. Once the implants have been placed, the patient will be required to undergo a process of recovery, in which osseointegration takes place. Osseointegration allows the implants to fuse with the jawbone so they are secure in place.

After osseointegration, the patient will return to their dentist for a denture fitting so the denture pieces can be created in a lab. Lastly, once the dentures have been created, the dentist will attach them to the abutments, which sit atop the dental implants, thus finishing off the All-on-4® process.

A smile makeover option

When considering a smile makeover, it is a good idea to consult with a dentist who can help the patient determine which procedures are the most appropriate. If the patient is looking to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, the dentist may point them in the direction of an All-on-4® procedure. However, if the patient is only replacing a couple of missing teeth, then dental implants paired with crowns may be a better choice.
