Did you know that it is possible to change the appearance of the gums? Most people do not realize this. It is common for people to believe that there is nothing one can do about the appearance of the gums. In reality, we have a variety of ways to change the shape and appearance of the gums. A grafting procedure is one of these options.
Why people want or need a grafting procedure
There are two main reasons that people visit our office to discuss a grafting procedure. The first reason is that gum disease is causing the gums to recede, which can be dangerous and unattractive. When the gum tissue begins to recede or pull away from the tooth structure, it exposes more of the tooth and the roots. This exposure can lead to further damage because more of the tooth structure will be susceptible to infection.
This is why so many people suffer from gum disease and end up losing their teeth. It is sometimes possible to prevent these types of consequences by visiting our office for a grafting procedure. This allows us to replace some of the gum tissue that has been lost and secures the gums back around the teeth so that they can be protected again.
The second reason people come in for a grafting procedure is aesthetic. An aesthetic tissue grafting can help improve the appearance of the smile by ensuring that there is sufficient gum tissue for a healthy and natural looking smile. Anyone whose smile is suffering because of the lack of gum tissue or gum tissue that is too small may find that this procedure provides a healthy and beautiful smile.
What the procedure entails
With an aesthetic tissue grafting, we can take some real or synthetic tissue and suture it to the gums. Then, we can secure the tissue back around the tooth so that it is in the proper place to provide the right amount of coverage. We can complete this procedure using sutures and sometimes lasers to aid in the healing process.
There will be a recovery time afterward where the gums are likely to be swollen and somewhat irritated. During this time, it becomes important to not eat anything that could scratch or irritate the gums in any way. We recommend a diet of foods that are very soft like Jell-O, applesauce, and yogurt. Additionally, warm soup and broth are good options.
It is also a good idea to use ibuprofen to help and reduce swelling along with a cold compress as necessary. After a couple of days, the gum tissue should begin to feel better and we will have a follow-up appointment to examine how they are healing. We can then provide further care instructions along with what foods are safe to eat.
Stunning results
The best part of scheduling an aesthetic tissue grafting procedure is that the results are stunning and make it easier to have a beautiful smile. For anyone who does not like how their smile appears due to reduced or small gum tissue, this single procedure can make a significant impact on how they look and feel.
