5 Reasons to Visit a Periodontist

If you have ever dealt with a dental issue, you would know that taking proper care of your teeth is essential for your overall health. Prevention of dental problems through visits to the periodontist should be a priority.

A periodontist is a dentist with expertise in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of periodontal diseases. The periodontium is the term for describing the surrounding structures of the teeth.

Experts recommend that you make two regular dental appointments per year. However, in some cases, you should not delay your visit until the next yearly appointment. In this article, we will cover five reasons to visit a periodontist.

If you feel pain or discomfort

The moment you start feeling a toothache, and it is not because of an injury, it means a cavity has worsened to the point of the dental pulp being infected. Do not assume that the pain will fade away automatically. Sometimes tooth pain can be accompanied by jaw pain and persistent headaches.

This pain is sometimes a result of teeth grinding (bruxism). You should never endure pain or discomfort when you can easily book an appointment with the periodontist to solve the issue.

Bleeding or swollen gums

If you discover blood after flossing or brushing, it is time to visit the periodontist. Bleeding gums is usually the first symptom of infections or diseases such as gingivitis (gum disease). Swollen gums often can cause serious discomfort.

The periodontist will perform an oral examination to determine the cause of the condition and recommend the proper course of action.

Loose Teeth

If you discover any of your teeth are shaky or feels loose, this may be another reason to book an appointment. Even if it seems minor, you should have it examined immediately, or you may lose the tooth eventually.

If you have had a previous dental procedure, and you feel it could the be cause, you should not wait to schedule and see the dentist.

Change of Bite

If you notice that your bite pattern has changed and your teeth feel a little odd when chewing or performing oral activities, you should immediately book an appointment with the periodontist. Since they are experts in that area, they will be able to determine the cause and recommend possible treatment options.

Bad Breath

There are not many things more embarrassing than finding yourself in a social setting and realizing you have bad breath. You may not know, but bad breath sometimes is the result of oral health issues, especially gum diseases.

If you realize that brushing your mouth is not doing much or it is proving difficult to obtain fresh breath, then you need to book an appointment for an oral examination.

That is not all…

If you have never visited a periodontist, it may be time to make an appointment. Some conditions are not obvious but can be treated better if diagnosed early. Preventing disease before it happens is always a healthier choice because it can save you from requiring expensive dental procedures.

During your appointment, the periodontist will examine the state of your gums, teeth, and mouth and give advice on how you can maintain excellent oral health.
